Guinea Pig Diet
If you adopt some guinea pigs you need to be careful of what you feed them. Guinea pigs need vitamin C on a daily basis. This is a very important aspect of their diet. They cannot manufacture it in their bodies so the best source of this is via fruit and vegetables. You can feed them with fresh fruit if you want. Some of the best forms of fruit are oranges, strawberries, tangerines, grapes, pear and other fresh fruit. Remember to feed them enough based on their weight. About 5 mg per pound (450 grams) of bodyweight
I experimented with different fresh fruit and vegetables until I found out what Nathan and Sparky liked best. It took a while so don’t worry if your pet piggie refuses a certain fresh food at first. Just give them the option of something else. One thing that will definitely love are carrots
Here are a number of other fruits and vegetable to test out with your guinea pig:
· Brussels sprouts
· Parsley
· Kiwi fruit
· Orange
· Tomatoes
· Basil
· Turnip greens
· Dandelion greens
· Red cabbage
· Broccoli
One thing to be aware of is giving your cavy too many green leafy vegetables. This can bring on diarrhoea so try to control this in their diet. Everything is best when eaten in moderation.
Never feed your pet piggie with the following:
· Rhubarb
· Green beans
· Potatoes with green spots
· Seeds
· Nuts
· Sticks of celery
· Plants
The first three items on the list above are all poisonous to cavies. Seeds and nuts should not be given to your pet piggies as they can choke on them. Besides this, the fat content is very high. A celery stick is too tough for piggies to eat. If you want to give them it, then cut it up into small chunks. Don’t put flowers in your guinea pig’s cage. Plants like daffodils, hyacinths and buttercups are actually poisonous guinea.
